Ruby Radio announced Health & Fitness Fair 2020 and its associated events will be postponed to a date still to be determined, likely in the summer.

“The whole idea of having a Health & Fitness Fair is to connect our community to resources and providers who could improve their health in a fun and engaging way,” said Ruby Radio President Ken Sutherland today to staff. “We don’t want to invite people to a health event where the possibility exists that they might get sick. Out of an abundance of caution for the health of our community, the responsible thing to do for our listeners and advertisers is to postpone.”

The Centers for Disease Control issued guidance this week that event planners should consider modifying or postponing large events to limit exposure to the COVID-19 virus “for the safety and well-being of participants, event staff and the community.” Ruby Radio has been in direct communication with the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health for guidance as well. The Health & Fitness Fair had approximately 4,800 visitors attend last year and was planning to host about 70 vendors this year so it qualifies as a “large event.”

Health & Fitness Fair’s Master Sponsor, Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital was planning to provide free blood draws to patients and community members at the event. They will announce separately how they will now deliver that service, either on their site or at the future Health & Fitness Fair. “Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital has been gracious and supportive,” said Sutherland, “and agreed that postponing this important event is both appropriate and wise.”

The event planned to use both the Elko Convention Center’s main building, as well as the Conference Center. Sutherland added “I want to thank the Elko Convention Center for their flexibility in helping us reschedule. We look forward to finding the right date once we know more about the progression of the virus.”

Ruby Radio is in the process now of contacting event participants to inform and work with them directly on any issues that might arise from postponing Health & Fitness Fair.
