Elko, NV - Ruby Radio will host its 3rd Annual Women’s Expo, a daylong event with shopping and activities designed for women and their families, on Saturday, August 5, 2017, at the Elko Convention Center.
"We expect over 3,000 attendees to shop and get information about services they need," said Alene Sutherland, Ruby Radio's Executive Vice President and the Event Director. "We want to empower women to find the treasures and resources that make their lives better."
Women's Expo will host 65 vendors, including Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital, Lavish by Lou that makes soap by hand, HeadStart, LuLaRoe, WalMart, Wilson-Bates Furniture, Thirty-One Bags, Taylor Chiropractic, Terraces Senior Center, Ruby Ribbon, and many others.
Outside on the Convention Center lawn will be a hub of activity: Elko City Fire Department will set appointments for infant car seat fittings. Newmont will bring their haul truck simulator so women can experience driving a 2-story tall truck! Home Depot will help kids build toys. Elko Velo Club will set up a Kids Bike Safety Rodeo in the parking area. Silver Haze food truck will serve tri-tip sandwiches, and Nevada Health Centers will set up Mammovan in the driveway.
At Women's Expo, women can also get a full breast exam in the Mammovan, usually without a physician referral. "Mammovan is a mobile mammography unit housed in an 18-wheeler," said Colleen Petrosky, Program Manager for Nevada Health Centers' Mammovan. "We travel to under-served areas of Nevada to provide breast exams because early detection is a key element in fighting breast cancer.
Breast cancer is the leading cancer among Nevada women of all races, according to CDC’s 2014 Top 10 Cancer Sites. 106 in 100,000 Nevada women had breast cancer in 2014, and it has the second highest death rate among cancer-related deaths.
Nevada Health Centers' Mammovan meets the same credentialing requirements for a freestanding facility. Results will be mailed to the patient and her primary care physician. Appointments are recommended for the 15-minute exam, but some walk-in slots should be available. At 2016 Women's Expo, Mammovan was "sold out" and provided 22 exams.
Women's Expo will set up on the front lawn and in the main hall at the Elko Convention Center, Saturday, August 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Event is free to attend.
Booth vendors got the booth space to sell goods and services, a week of radio ads on Ruby Radio's six area stations leading up to the event. Vendors who signed up before July 15 were included in on-air announcements promoting the event. Ruby Radio announcers will interview vendors at the event, and run several of those interviews on air. Businesses still interested in exhibiting can contact Alene Sutherland, Event Director (775) 777-1196.
